What the Audit Checks, and What It Cannot

Found on every page

  • Images with no alt attribute
  • Form fields with no label
  • Links and buttons with nothing to announce
  • Frames and embeds with no accessible name
  • Empty headings and skipped heading levels
  • A missing or empty page language
  • A missing or empty page title
  • Repeated landmarks with no distinct name
  • ARIA attributes on elements that do not accept them
  • Autoplaying media and timed page refreshes

Needs a person

  • Color contrast (use the contrast checker with your colors)
  • Keyboard access and visible focus
  • Whether alt text and labels actually describe things
  • Captions, transcripts and audio descriptions
  • Screen reader behavior of custom widgets

An automated audit is the fast, repeatable part of the job: it finds the faults a template copies onto every page, and it proves a fix holds across the whole site. It is not a certificate of conformance, and no tool honestly sells one. For color pairs, use the color contrast checker; for a single page or pasted code, the website accessibility checker.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a website accessibility audit cost?
Here, the scan of every page is free and gives you the score, the totals and the five issues to fix first. The complete report, every page with its own findings, is 49 EUR excluding VAT, paid once, or included in the Solo plan (49 EUR a month, 7-day free trial), which re-reads the site every week. A manual audit by a specialist firm is quoted per project and costs far more: one French firm publishes 1,400 to 4,900 EUR excluding VAT.
Is this an ADA compliance audit?
It is an automated audit against the WCAG rules a machine can test, and WCAG is the standard Section 508 and the European Accessibility Act build on. The ADA does not certify websites, and no tool can make a site ADA compliant on its own. Use the report to find and fix what automation finds, then have the rest tested by hand before you claim conformance.
How much of WCAG can an automated audit cover?
A real share, not all of it. In Deque's study of more than 13,000 pages, automated rules found about 57% of issues by volume, but those issues fell under only 16 of the 50 WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria. The rest, such as keyboard flow or whether an alt text is meaningful, needs a person.
How many pages does it read?
Every page the site publishes, found from its sitemap or its links: up to 500 pages for a scan started without an account, and up to 5,000 once you sign in. The report says how many pages were found and how many were read, so nothing is left out silently.
Does it check color contrast?
No. Contrast depends on the colors a browser computes, which a scan of the markup does not see. Check your color pairs with the free contrast checker; it uses the exact WCAG ratio and never rounds a fail into a pass.
What else does the audit check besides accessibility?
Each page also gets HTML validity, CSS, meta tags, Open Graph tags, page weight and the site's robots.txt. Those are the problems that break a launch for reasons other than accessibility, and they show up in the same report.
Can an agency hand the report to a client?
Yes. The report exports to PDF and Markdown. On the Agency plan the PDF carries your agency's name rather than ours, for up to ten client sites re-read every week.
